Angus Pryor

Head of the School of Arts at The University of Gloucestershire, Reader in Fine Art

As well as being a senior manager in Higher Education, I am also a painter, writer and curator. I have pioneered Practice as Research at The University of Gloucestershire, leading artists, photographers, filmmakers and performers to be able to gain national and international recognition for their research.

My practice is invariably enriched by international collaboration and, having have completed large projects in The UK, India and Holland, I am currently producing a large body of work heavily influenced by the culture and artistic style of Ethiopia, as well as paying homage to its religious iconography and the manner that it is displayed for public worship and participation.

The Exhibition

This exhibition is the fruit of a research collaboration between Angus Pryor and Philip Esler, Portland Professor in New Testament Studies at the University of Gloucestershire. It originated in 2015 in the context of a British Academy funded project on '1 Enoch and Contemporary Theology', which enabled theological discussion between Ethiopian and Western academics in Addis Ababa and Cheltenham. Angus's visits to Ethiopia with Professor Esler and their continuing conversations on this project since then have demonstrated the benefits of artists working with biblical theologians. Building upon these conversations and related research, Philip Esler has written the introduction to the collection and co-authored the analyses of the individual paintings.
